MSI Sensors Expands Product Lines and Capabilities with Entran Acquisition

This past summer, MSI Sensors acquired three companies to rapidly increase capabilities and product offerings for our customers: Encoder Devices, Elekon Industries and Entran. Encoder Devices was profiled last month [button to Oct 04 Signals]; Elekon Industries will be profiled in an upcoming issue of Signals.

Founded in 1970 by a team of engineers, Entran specializes in the static and dynamic measurement of pressure, acceleration and force for system critical applications. Focusing on miniature and compact instrumentation, Entran has optimized micro-miniaturization techniques by applying the latest semiconductor, thin film, metallic foil and hybrid circuit technologies.

From sophisticated sensors the size of a pinhead to instruments which can survive a 50,000g shock, Entran products have enabled the development of high technology programs around the world. Entran has deep experience providing industry-specific solutions for automobile crash and dummy testing, motorsport racing, military aerospace and OEM process control.

Entran has a large engineering, manufacturing and sales center in Western Europe, which gives MSI Sensors an expanded footprint in that part of the world. US operations are being consolidated into MSI Sensors world headquarters in Hampton, VA over the next year.

“We’re very excited about the prospects of marrying MSI’s MEMs capabilities with Entran’s proprietary designs for a new generation of high performance products,” noted Bill Caplan, President and Founder of Entran. “Entran customers will also benefit from MSI’s considerable manufacturing capabilities.”

Aerospace Pressure Sensing:
MSI Delivers a “Failure Rate of Zero”

Electronics International (Bend, OR) makes and sells monitoring and display systems for general aviation. Their systems monitor critical engine parameters and consist of sensors, panel mount displays and interconnect wiring. The application requires components to be accurate, reliable, rugged, low weight, small size and reasonably priced.

Product Failures Lead to Search for New Supplier
Electronics International (EI) had been buying pressure sensors from the same company for more than two decades. In 2003, problems with quality, infant mortality, field failures, poor responsiveness and late deliveries drove the Company to seek other suppliers for pressure sensors. EI contacted MSI Sensors asking for a drop-in replacement device. MSI quickly assessed their needs and recommended a slightly modified US300 pressure transducer.

“The Engineers at MSI were easy to work with,” observed Ron Roberts, President of Electronics International. “They listened to our needs…In fact, everyone all they way up through sales and management was easy to get a hold of and work with.”

Testing in the Lab… and the Field
Over a period of a few weeks, evaluation samples were prepared and sent to EI for testing. Roberts described his testing process: “I tore the cases off the samples and conducted humidity tests on the internal components, the ceramic and circuit boards. I went after the potential weak spots by getting into the guts of the product and injecting humidity. We studied how everything was built, designed, soldered, attached. The seals were so simplistic and so effective, it was awesome. MSI passed with flying colors.”

EI made the switch to the MSI immediately. The result has been steady shipments of product, on time, with no failures, and at a price lower than the previous supplier.

A year later, Ron Roberts remains very pleased: “To this day, we have had no failures. The failure rate went to zero the moment we went to your product. MSI just hands down beat our previous supplier on reliability, price and customer service.”

MSP 610: CE Rated Pressure Transducers

The MSI Sensors MSP 610 line of pressure transducers is designed to perform in the most demanding heavy industrial electromagnetic environments. A newly designed protection bulkhead provides a high level of immunity to radio frequency interference (RFI), electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. These safeguards are necessary in the increasingly demanding industrial electromagnetic environment.

The MSP 610 is certified and marked to rigorous CE standards for equipment intended for use in industrial environments, including outdoor environments and long cable runs.

The CE mark is mandatory for products imported into European Union countries, making the MSP 610 ideal for OEMs manufacturing in Europe or planning to import their equipment into Europe.

The MSP 610 sets a price performance standard for low-cost, high volume, high performance commercial and industrial applications. The MSP 610 is suitable for many applications including industrial machinery, hydraulics, HVAC, refrigeration, pumps, compressors and more. Manufactured from 17-4PH or 316L stainless steel, the MSP 610 features MSI Sensors’ proprietary Microfused™™ technology in which the silicon piezoresistive strain gage is fused with high temperature glass to a stainless steel diaphragm. The Microfused™™ process creates a hermetic seal for stability and high performance in harsh environments. The modular design offers a wide range of pressure ranges and is adaptable to an infinite number of port variations. Standard outputs include .5V to 4.5V ratiometric, 1V to 5V regulated and 4 to 20 mA current loop.

Although CE marking permits self-certification, MSI Sensors has used two independent, internationally accredited test houses to validate the design in support of our Declaration of Conformity. The MSP 610 meets or exceeds the most rigorous requirements:

• Emissions
• EM Field Immunity
• Conducted RF
• Surge Immunity
• Electrostatic Discharge Immunity
• EFT Immunity
