ED-22 Industrial Sealed Potentiometer

In search of a better way to measure rotational input a customer approached us looking to replace a 270 degree potentiometer. This application consisted of a rotational panel mounted control used on an industrial paint spraying system which was subjected to a severe environment, with high vibration, and contamination issues related to the end use of the product. Our answer is the all new ED-22 potentiometer replacement, designed to be drop-in compatible with existing potentiometers. This unit utilizes our magnetic encoder technology in a cost effective high volume, industry specific package.

Quick Turn LVDT capability Servo Valve

An International hydraulics control company had and urgent requirement to reduce the size of its position sensor on a new servo valve application.

It took Measurement Specialties just 4 weeks from receipt of order to design and supply 5 fully functional prototypes that completely met the customer’s requirements.

The LVDT had to be just 8 mm diameter with a linear range of 2mm and withstand an operating pressure of 1000 psi. The customer had a linearity requirement of +/-1% but Measurement Specialties was able to supply parts to its standard +/-0.25%.

LVDT’s are the position sensors of choice for servo valves due to their ability to operate in hostile environments, high frequency response, non contact design which means excellent service life and the ability to have a pressure barrier between the core and coil assembly.

Measurement of the “spool” position on a servo valve provides a closed loop system which improves system response and accuracy.

AP Series Gage Heads used in dimensional gaging applications

Measurements Specialties now offers a new lower cost, higher performance Gage Head product – the AP Series which lends itself to OEM market. The primary difference in this new product is a redesigned linear bearing assembly. This new design has been tested to over 10,000,000 cycles, with superior performance than our competitors. The significant efforts to achieve this higher level of performance have also resulted in a more competitive cost structure which will allow us a significant cost advantage over competitors. We have also streamlined our manufacturing process, where the end customization, laser marking and custom packaging will be completed at our Hampton Va. Facility.

Custom Rotational Sensor - Off Highway Equipment

The Problem:
The customer needed to compute and control boom trajectory of a 50 foot (15.24 meters) boom on a material handler. In order to do this they were considering using an absolute angle sensor to determine boom angle and use a gyroscope to control trajectory during boom movement. While an interesting solution this would have been out of budget and far too complex.

The Solution:
After discussing the details of the problem with the customer, Measurement Specialties engineers suggested a simpler lower cost solution consisting of a low resolution absolute angle encoder coupled with a high resolution incremental encoder. The low resolution angle encoder would be used to determine boom angle at the time of the initial movement, while the high resolution linear encoder would be used by the material handler’s control system to control the boom movement through space

Ball and Butterfly Valves

Unlike gate valves, ball and butterfly valves rotate rather then move linearly. To control these types of valves a rotary sensor such as a potentiometer, hall effect sensor, encoder or RVDT may be used as a feedback device to determine valve position.
